I’m not sure that there’s anything sacred anymore in the culture we live in. Sure we all have things that are sacred to our own hearts, but when it comes to a society as a whole, there’s just not much that everyone would agree is off limits. If you spend any time at all on social media or online, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Several months ago, Facebook introduced a brand new feature that allows you to “mark yourself safe” from natural disasters and tragic events when they take place in your geographic location. It’s a great way to help your friends and family know that you’re ok, to give them peace of mind. It seems like people would use it when it was appropriate right? It can really be a useful tool, an upgrade to our society really.
But of course, no sooner was the feature launched, did people pounce on the opportunity to make a new meme, and the marked safe from craze began. We saw things like “Marked safe from being tricked into watching Bird Box,” “Marked safe from romaine lettuce,” and “Marked safe from the March 2019 Facebook crash.” In all honesty… They’re pretty funny, and I think funny is a really good thing. A good dose of humor helps us keep a healthy perspective on life. Seriously, life is better when you’re laughing.
My favorite marked safe meme is “Marked safe from another day of parenting.” I mean, how many of us feel like that’s the world we live in!? Where every day is a struggle just to make ends meet, just to make it to the next day, your expectations as a parent really matter.
What if we adjusted our expectations and accepted the reality that sometimes, surviving is thriving. No, it’s not a great long term plan, but honestly, sometimes we just need to cut ourselves a break.
Sometimes just making it to tomorrow does qualify as a win. Why? Because God’s got your tomorrow.
Should we lower our standards so low that we aren’t driven to accomplish our goals and make progress toward our dreams? Clearly not. But what if, as parents, we adopted a new philosophy…. set a new default mindset. Count today as a win, and go win tomorrow. There will always be reasons why today wasn’t a win. But every day is filled with reasons of why it was. It comes down to how we choose to evaluate it. How we think about life, is how we start to live in life.
Paul says we are “transformed by the renewing of your mind” in Romans 12:2. Psychology calls it Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I just know that it works. What you think, dictates how you feel, and what you feel dictates what you do. If you change what, and how, you think, you will change how you live. Focus on the wins of today. Focus on winning tomorrow. Choose to see the positive. Let God show you how he’s working in your life. What you focus on, is who you will become. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind, and start a new day tomorrow.
