The past few weeks have been filled with Graduation ceremonies, dinners, and parties. It’s an amazing milestone in the life of a teenager, and it’s exciting. It’s a huge moment in the life of a parent as well. Yes graduation is technically about the completion of secondary education, but graduation really symbolizes the transitional right of passage from childhood into young adulthood. It’s a long journey, and that journey starts when that beautifully little baby is born - approximately 1,000 weeks.
Let’s be honest, when you say 1,000 weeks, it seems like you’ve got a good bit of time… if you’re child isn’t born yet. But every year, you lose 52 of those precious weeks. Let's look at it this way: You have a…
Newborn for a month
Infant for a year
Toddler for two years
Preschooler of two years
Child for five years
Preteen for three years
Teenager for five years
And just like that, your kid is graduated from high school, and off to live on their own epic journey without you by their side.
That’s when you hear the classic question: “Where did the time go?”
Muhammed Ali famously said, ”Don’t count the days, make the days count.” It’s a great quote. It has a great ring to it. I’m sure it’s inspired plenty of people to go out and make the most of their life. But how often do we get distracted or sidetracked and lose our focus on the things that matter most? God gave you time with your kids, because there are some things that only you can do for them. So how do we keep from missing out?
In his book Don’t Miss It, Reggie Joiner suggests, “When you count your weeks, you tend to make your weeks count.”
I do this with my kids through the Parent Cue app. Arbour has 848 weeks until she graduates. Oak has 768 weeks. Autumn only has 699. Because I’m aware of the weeks, I can already see how quickly my time is passing and I’m reminded to make the most of my weeks.
There are six things that every kid needs:
Try to start meeting these needs in to the daily rhythm of your life. Don’t try to jump on all six of these at once though! You’ll set yourself up to fail. You’ll end up overwhelmed, and your kids will think something is seriously wrong…
Pick one need to focus on this week, and make your weeks count.
